Now Covid is over, it is time for me to get back on the road to Frankfurt as one my regular work travels. I have been to Frankfurt a few times so it is also time for me to visit near by cities and explore Germany further.
March in Germany is relatively cool and wet but you do get the occasional sun during the day.
Accommodation
One of the perks of visiting smaller cities in Europe is that you can often find unique converted hotels with interesting stories. On this occasion of have decided on the Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, Curio Collection by Hilton.
A hotel as unique as its guests – the Wasserturm Hotel Cologne is an authentic place full of original experiences that go beyond an ordinary hotel stay. Inspired by geometric patterns and its history as Europe’s once highest water tower, the building promises original discoveries at every turn. From the 11 m high lobby up to the lofty heights of Bar Botanik’s rooftop terrace, expect a unique journey from bottom to top.
Restaurants
As much as Cologne has been hyped out as the unofficial LGBT capital of Germany, it is only in the past 5 years that modern bistros been popping up. Now there is a good selection of wine bars and fine dining options instead of just your traditional German pubs.
I also managed to sample some good Asian options as I was started to miss them after a week in Germany
PULS - Restaurant & Bar
My first dinner in Cologne was a more modern affair. I managed to find one of the only Gastro Wine Bar in Old Town. The food was elevated and the bartender was super attentive. There were a few dishes that were on a more foamy side so avoid ordering them together as it does get a bit heavy.
Brauhaus Sünner im Walfisch
Tucked away in the old town is a slightly less touristy option for a traditional German pub. The meat are surprisingly tender despite the look.
Bun Pho - Vietnamese Cuisine
Run by local Vietnamese people the food is decent enough to quench my Asian cravings.
Takumi - Japanisches Ramen Restaurant
One of the more popular ramen place in Cologne. The soup base was very good and full of flavours.
Kaizen
A hip causal Japanese joint for your usual dishes. The sushi rice was a bit overcooked and wet but the vibe was good.
Pigeon Post Bar & Eatery
Although looked promising on pictures we were not able to try the food here since the kitchen was closed due to renovation. The burger which we were served was pretty sad looking.
Attractions
Cologne is a much smaller city than I was expecting but still certainly has enough to fill 2-4 days depending on how jam pack you want your schedule. The main tourist sites are all around the old town so it is pretty easy to walk to everywhere. I strong recommend you to take a local walking tour to learn about the history of this quaint city.
Cologne: Guided Highlights Tour
Step into local life as you explore the streets of Cologne with a local by your side. See the Gothic Cathedral, discover the impressive Dionysos mosaic next door, and pass the Museum Ludwig of Modern Art on your way to the river.
Stroll along the banks of the Rhine, then walk through the narrow cobbled lanes of the former merchants’ quarter around St. Martin’s church to the spacious Alter Markt (Old Market Square) and the City Hall.
Hohenzollern Bridge
Iconic rail & pedestrian bridge over the Rhine known for its thousands of padlocks symbolizing love.
Personal Photo Shooting Session
I did not realise everything is closed on a Sunday in Germany by law so it was a good opportunity to try out the photographer I previously saw online. Nadiia is from Ukraine and was super friendly and casual in taking pictures of me. The entire session is about 1.5hr and Nadiia will take you around some good locations. For Euro100 I told 350 raw images and 10 touched up ones which was a pretty good deal.
LGBT / Nightlife
Most of the LGBT establishments are on Schaafenstraße. You can check out the below bars each offering something different:
Exile on Main Street: Bar with club floor
Die Mumu: Bar with club floor
MD Bar: LGBT friendly cocktail bar. Upscale
Kinkz
Bathhouse Babylon Cologne: One of the best gay Sauna in Europe.
However I do think all of them are pretty similar and not worth writing home about
Papa Joe's Jazz Bar
One of the most well known Jazz club in Cologne.
Shopping
Although a relatively small city, there are a few noticeable streets worth looking around for shopping.
Ehrenstraße: Smaller independent labels and boutique shops.
Schildergasse: High Street with popular chain stores
