Since my current carry-on been slowing falling apart a few months ago, I have spent way too many hours on the internet in search of a perfect one. Refusing to believe Sogo is the only option, I was surprised to find that even online options are not that great either.
I have no preference in terms of hard or soft shell, but personally I would like to have an external compartment for easier access. This already rules 99% of the hard cases out. However the soft case does not provide enough protect and often not aesthetically pleasing. There is also the element of pricing. Do I travel THAT much to justify the price I'm paying so far? Especially with these new smart carry-ons with a built in battery. As someone who works out of the office often I already have an external battery. Do I really need one to come with my luggage.
I am still looking for my perfect match but here are my current favourites. They are not in any particular order.
1. Carl Friedrik - The Carry On
A heritage-inspired case made crafted from lightweight polycarbonate, reinforced with a rigid aluminium lock frame and Italian leather detailing. Set to be release later in the year 2019 this carry-on sure looks way better than you average hard case with the leather accent. It terms of functionality the 4 Japanese wheels will be good but other than that there is not much else to offer. Pretty but still not external compartment
2. Away - The Carry-On with Pocket
A noteworthy newcomer in the smart luggage market. The perfect carry-on with an extra thoughtful feature—a built-in nylon front pocket for the items you reference most in transit. Sized to fit in the overhead bin of most major airlines, it's thoughtfully designed to last a lifetime—and guaranteed for it too. You can choose whether it comes with the external battery or not with this one.
3. Tumi - 19 Degree Carry On
The farther you go, the more stamps on your passport, the better your story. Your 19 Degree luggage is part of that story. Exceptionally striking up close or from a distance, this super durable carry-on boasts a modern silhouette with fluid looking, strategically contoured angles. Ideally designed for short, overnight trips and travel within Europe and other international destinations. It is by far one of the best looking carry-on so far by one of the big players in the industry. If you had the money and didn't want to get Rimowa like everybody else, this could be your answer.
4. Muji - Foldable Soft Carry Suitcase
You know the brand. I believe they launched this end of last year and it is the most functional carry-on I have seen so far in the market. Foldable and has 2 front compartments.
5. Xiaomi - Passport Suitcase
This is a bit of an odd option as I have only discovered it today. It is the cheapest out of all the options but ticking all the right boxes at the same time. It has a front pocket, 4 wheel 'drive' and it look pretty smart.
